Intimate sculptures of faces crafted out of wet paper, a look at artist Polly Verity
At the age of 8, Polly Verity was gifted a book by her step-grandfather, a book he had written titled “Your Book of Paperfolding.” A young Verity discovered you could turn a once flat surface into a 3D object and has since been doing just that. Polly has worked in various mediums of art in the physical and digital space. While learning 3D modeling, she took these same techniques to a physical medium and created her wire sculpture series. However, her main series of works consisted of paper works with sharp folds of geometric designs.
Verity’s most recent project is that of folding wet paper to forum soft curves rather sharp lines. She manipulates these soft curves to create faces within the paper. For the most part, these sculptures depict two faces in the middle of kissing, but as the series has grown so have the faces. In one piece we see a face sticking out its tongue, in another we see it smacking a cigarette. Using this origami paper wet Verity can control the paper more easily, allowing for soft and intimate curves to be created with each face influencing the outcome of the second face.
