Exploring Memory and Emotion: GOTO Atsuko creates Ethereal Watercolor Art
I find myself clinging to a multitude of emotions and memories. It seems that I am endlessly revisiting past events in my mind, dissecting them in search of deeper understanding or explanation. Time can be both our enemy and our friend, sometimes revealing the truths behind past events while at other times leaving them shrouded in mystery. Memories, too, can lie dormant within our minds, only to resurface years later in the form of dreams. Today I’m reminded of these facts by artist GOTO Atsuko.
In the realm of watercolor painting, artist GOTO Atsuko delves into the depths of the unconscious, drawing inspiration from dreams and reflections on society. Influenced by her experiences in France and the aftermath of Japan’s 2011 earthquake, Atsuko explores themes of selflessness and resignation intertwined with the natural world. Her work possesses a haunting beauty, ethereal and capable of transporting you to a world beyond your own.
“I strongly felt, and was made aware of how the Japanese viewed selflessness, resignation and obedience as virtues.
I feel that Japanese live in the middle of a wide emptiness, locked up inside their imaginary cocoon, calm and sincere, but quietly desperate. As a Japanese myself, I draw imaginary landscapes seen from the inside of this world.” – GOTO Atsuko
