The Rock-‘N’-Roll Painter Abdul Vas

Today we look at the Rock-‘N’-Roll painter Abdul Vas who lives and works between Ho Chi Minh City and Madrid. Growing up in a house full of music like Hank Wiliams, The Rolling Stones, Louis Armstrong, and more, Abdul found music to be a way to connect with the other aspects of life. He turners notes and riffs into images that are then engraved on the canvas. Abdul’s main inspiration is the band AC/DC and their current singer Brian Johnson. His love for the band began when he saw a series of promotional videos for the 1990 album “The Razors Edge” and the constant reply of their music videos like “Thunderstruck” and “Money Talks” on MTV that he found absolutely astonishing at the young age of 9.

“My goal is to paint Brian Johnson’s voice on the canvas. I want to capture that sound. I’m obsessed with his vocal power.” – Abdul Vas

This blend of rock into contemporary art is what sets Abdul’s paintings apart in the crowded sea of contemporary painters. The design of each piece is minimal with solid backgrounds and subjects painted with a limited color palette that finds variety in its shading. His raw and powerful imagery perfectly captures the energy of AC/DC’s music and turns it into a work of art that fits perfectly with Vas’s style of character design.
