Alessandro Gallo showcases our individual behaviors through his hybrid sculptures
We see a mule talking on the phone with a knife stabbed into his chest. A frog giving two birds what appear to be couples counseling. And of course a ram with chest tattoos holding a baseball bat like he is about to open a can of whoop-ass. These weird animal-human hybrids are the surreal and detailed sculptures by Alessandro Gallo.
Alessandro is an Italian artist born and currently residing in the city of Genoa. Gallo has become quite known for these sculptures of the last few years. The process begins with a rendered reference photo that is created down to the finest detail of what the clothing and hairs should like look on the sculpture. He then creates a figure out of a plumber’s pipe before sculpting out of clay and painting the figures with each work being one to two feet in height.
Gallo is using these works to represent the lives of people around him. While using the animal heads almost like a mask and a tool for expressing more of an individual’s personal characteristics and as a fashion statement. He explains in this quate some of these characteristics and how they relate to the animals chosen. “Donkeys are stubborn, eagles are noble, pigs are greedy. Chameleons can rotate their eyes independently allowing them to observe in all directions with minimal movement, a perfect quality for an opportunistic hunter.” (via https://www.northernclaycenter.org/ )
