Fear of surveillance, a look at the ‘Nest’ installation series by Jakub Geltner
In 2022 are we ever really alone? We carry phones with us everywhere we go that track our movements, what we watch, who we call, and even what we want to purchase. It doesn’t stop there either with our computers and TVs being able to spy on us as well. With all of the convenience and luxury of these technological advances is it worth it compared to what we give up? Jakub Geltner looks to shine more light on this topic with his ongoing series of public installations titled “Nest.”
Starting back in 2011 Geltner has now done a total of 7 “Nest” installations across the world. “Nest 01” was a group of surveillance cameras all mounted to a wall facing a waterfront in Prague. Nest 02, 03, and 07 all are installations of satellite clusters while the rest in the series are security cameras. The most notable installations in our opinion are numbers 05 and 06. In Nest 05 we see a cluster of cameras installed onto rocks that go out into the sea off the coast of Denmark. In 06 we see what is probably the most in-your-face sculpture yet which shows a pole full of cameras, the pole bends over toward the walkway with each camera pointing directly at anybody who walks past.
