“Everything is Something, Nothing is Something Too” A series By Bas van Wieringen
Dutch artist Bas Van Wieringen’s works of art are minimal and humorous. In his series “Everything is something, Nothing is Something too” Wieringen sets out to strip objects down to there core meanings and functions. In a work titled “In the end, the book will save itself” depicts a book being held open by a burning match. Foreshadowing the book’s inevitable closing, fulfilling its purpose while the match fulfills it’s own. We can also look at the work titled “Hanging shelf with ballon” which shows an upside-down shelf keeping a balloon from floating up. The absurdity in these works makes it just as interesting to view as does its serious aspects. I wonder to myself is the shelf really mounted upside down or is the photo just simply flipped upset down. Those thoughts are what makes the works of Bas Van Wieringen so much fun to dissect.
‘For me a work works when its makes sense in nonsense. When we can laugh about the absurdity, but take it seriously at the same time. I want the viewer to reconsider the situation by creating minimalistic interventions that are often humorous or/and poetic.’
