Unique Board (UB) Turning Graphic Designs into Sculptures
Meet Dan Kim, the founder of the New York-based company called Unique Board (UB). The company that is bringing visionary ideas to life through limited edition sculptures.
“My journey with UB accidentally began right after graduating from NYU Tisch majoring in Film/Television. I had a great opportunity to shoot a music video but did not know anybody who could help. The only place I could look for was Craigslist,” said Kim. Out of this, the first version of UB was born. A website where artists working in different mediums such as cinematography, fashion, design, music, art, dance/performance and technology/programming could find each other for different projects. The website was featured by the New York Times T magazine as “Site-To-Be-Seen” and supported over 100 projects. However, finding collaborators wasn’t a complete solution to make ideas happen. “It was more about financial support,” said Kim.
With thousands of people on platforms such as Instagram and Pinterest, artists are constantly being discovered by new fans. To offer fans something to physically experience the works, most artists will do prints and other merchandise items for there fans, such as T-shirts, hats, and hoodies. But Kim felt a desire to create something more original and unique for these artists to offer their fans. With this idea, the new direction of UB was born. They began to collaborate with some of the most forward-thinking graphic designers on Instagram today. Taking their ideas from the screen to the real world by creating quality, affordable, and original sculptures. They create these unique sculptures by using 3D printing and molding/casting. The first sculpture series they launched featured artists Esteban Diacono, Wang & Soderstrom, and Lee Sol (Venus Mansion). They will be launching their second series in February of this year, so keep your eye out for whats next.
