The impactful and minimal street art of Daan Botlek
Artist Daan Botlek populates walls around the world with his minimal and entertaining characters. Based in Rotterdam, Netherlands Botlek is an illustrator and street artist whose focus is on how his characters interact with the world. When he started he was making art that was much more intricate and focused on the style and process rather than what was being portrayed. Soon Botlek grew board of this and took a step back to evaluate his work and craft a new art language for himself.
This is how he landed on the style of his current art. He took three pens one red, one back, and one green he then sat down and began to strip back the human form until it was nothing but a blank shell. The works then became more about the way these figures would interact with the world around them. The art was not in the beauty of the work but the actions within, this became a studio of mankind itself. He took these figures and began to populate the walls of the world with them, carefully picking spots that could make for unique scenarios.
“If you paint a small piece on a carefully chosen spot, the whole area will be affected by this and becomes part of the scene. Sketching in advance became useless. In a way the circumstances will decide what image or story will emerge.” – Daan Botlek (Via the artist website)
