Today we sit down with Indonesian graphic artist Stephanie Priscilla for a quick interview. We talk about everything from her favorite artists, tv shows, music, and much more!
Where are you from, and how long have you been making art?
I came from Indonesia and I’ve been professionally making art since 2015
Tell us a little more about yourself, what are some of your favorite movies, or tv shows?
My Name is Stephanie. Some of my favorite movies include Perfect Blue by Satoshi Kon, most of Satoshi Kon’s movies actually. I also like Ghibli movies. I like Sofia Coppola’s movies too such as The Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation. For Tv shows, I love Stranger Things, Mindhunter, etc
Do you listen to music or watch movies while creating art? Can you give us a glimpse into what your playlist looks like?
Ah yes, music is basically my life. I always get inspired the most by music. I have variations of playlist but they include some of my fav singers/bands such as Grimes, Lana Del Rey, Girl in Red, Soccer Mommy, Clairo, Cavetown, The 1975, Swim Deep, etc I kinda like it when a song explains about the tragic of a love stories or relationship stories. There’s something beautiful in those painful events that somehow we can relate too. Most of my artwork have that sort of content I feel.
What are your biggest inspirations?
Most probably everyday events in life. Mother nature and human condition also will always be my inspirations.
About how many works do you tend to make in any given day or week?
Normally I would produce maybe 3-4 work per week. Depends on the inspiration that I get. If I’m having an art block normally I would stop. It’s better to stop then push yourself too hard and nothing come out great.
Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of art?
Yes, I love singing and playing a little bit of piano. Not great but I enjoy it
If you could collab with another artist who would it be?
Hmmm… Maybe with Ai Yazawa or Asano Inio. They are my idols. I love their work so much!
When you start a new drawing do you normally try out a few different looks before you land on the final one, or do you know what look you are going for from the beginning?
Normally I kinda know what I wanna draw or experiment and I will sketch a couple of options (rough sketches) and I will do the final piece afterwards
A lot of your works are full of bright colors and have an almost dream-like feeling to them. How do you think you have ended up with this style?
I think there’s always that dreamy factor that’s always in me since very young. But my current style is so different from earlier years. I think it’s always nice to see your art evolve everytime
You often draw more females than males in your work. This seems to be a common trend with art as a whole. What do you think is the reason behind this?
For me, it’s because I’m a female myself so it’s a subject that I can relate the most. But also because when I was working fulltime in a motion graphic studio a lot of the time the subject is male so during my free time I draw female more. Now I’m a full-time freelancer. I like to express myself through these characters that I create.
Instagram is what most people use to consume art on a daily basis. How do you think Instagram has helped you as an artist if at all?
It really helps to put yourself out there and so many other artists you can connect with and get inspired by. I just love the artist community there and I will be forever grateful because Instagram kinda changes my life in terms of being an artist.
Do you have anything else you would like to tell our readers?
Don’t give up in achieving your goals and when you do things with passion, they will bring you so much joy!
