Clouds turn into otherworldly creatures in these magical drawings by Vorja Sánchez
Spanish artist Vorja Sánchez lives and immerses himself in the forest. Using everyday life and his imagination he is able to use his drawings to bring to life these strange yet familiar creatures. His traditional style of works consists of drawings and paintings of muted colors showcasing storybook-style creatures.
His latest series of surreal artworks called “interventions” was how I found Sánchez’s works. While on a walk through a series of high-altitude mountains he observed the misty clouds and as he continued they appeared to be following him. “it formed a consistent cloud that seemed to chase me throughout the route. I took a picture of him and when I got to the studio I decided to finish shaping that “creature” that had been following me all day” Sánchez explains how the series came about.
Instead of drawings on paper and canvas, these works are done on top of real photos taken by Vorja. After each photo is taken he makes sure to let nature speak for itself, so without editing the photo he simply selects a very fine brush and digital draws the creature using only one color. To Vorja the creatures and magic of each image are already present in nature, he is just defining it for the viewer.
“I really enjoy looking at the creature in front of me. There are cases in which it is very clear when its shape is perfectly defined and I just have to finish giving it life with a few lines. The magic is in nature, not in the drawings!” says Sánchez.
