Salman Khoshroo manipulates wool to simulate brush strokes in portraits and sculptures
Iranian artist Salman Khoshroo began his art career as a self-taught painter specializing in portrait work. But most recently inspired by the covid 19 pandemic, has ventured into the world of sculpture. Drawing from his previous work Salman began to create 3-dimensional abstract portraits out of colorfully dyed wool. Using the wool fibers in a way that is comparative to brush strokes Salman is able to express deep emotion by recreating realistic facial features and expressions.
“my art plays with the expectations and perceptions of the human image,’ says Khoshroo. “my aim is to make full volume sculptures in wool and develop some of the ideas out of this initial project,” the artist explains to designboom)
The male bust is made of pastel blue and pink colored wool almost resembling cotton candy. His eyes closed and his expression restful the portrait is deeply fascinating and extremely elaborate. The female head bust is as beautiful as it is impactful with its piercing blue wool eyes and chocolate brown flowing hair. The bust draws you in with an abundance of delicate wool fiber features and a strong expression.
“my art plays with the expectations and perceptions of the human image.” “it is an obsession to take inanimate materials such as paint, and shape it into a face that embodies a human soul. by soul I don’t mean a religious or spiritual notion, the idea is more about emotions, intelligence, and character.” – Salman Khoshroo (Via designboom)
